Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery
Now at CRHS
(Fall, 2006) Columbus Regional Healthcare System (CRHS) recently purchased a computer system to assist surgeons with joint replacement surgery. CRHS orthopedic surgeons Dr. Stephen Candela and Dr. Andrew Schuett have performed what only a handful of surgeons across the country - and no others yet in this area - have been able to offer: computer-assisted, less invasive joint replacement surgery.

The computer system has custom-designed software, infrared camera and surgical instruments. It's designed to help surgeons navigate around a knee or hip during surgery, allowing surgeons to more precisely place implants, particularly within smaller incisions, through enhanced guidance and visualization.

Computer-assisted surgery (CAS) is being referred to as a "global positioning system" for the human body. CAS is a critical advancement in orthopedic surgery, offering significant benefits to the patient. It reduces surgical exposure and recovery times, enabling patients to more quickly resume normal activities.

This is the future of orthopedic surgery. And fortunately, residents in Columbus and surrounding counties can stay close to home to receive this standard of care today. Currently CRHS is one of the few hospitals in eastern North Carolina and South Carolina to purchase and use this system. Contrary to common assumptions about cutting-edge procedures, a trip to "the big city" is not required.
