With over 30 years of hospital operations, strategic business development and consulting experience, Don Smithburg has guided some of the country’s leading medical centers to achieve their operational and financial goals. Some of these include his role as Chief Executive Officer at LSU Health; President & CEO, University of Texas Southwestern Hospitals and Clinics in Dallas; and Executive Director of Truman Health System in Kansas City, MO. In his position at LSU, he managed and operated nine hospitals and clinics throughout the state, ranging in size from 16 to 550 beds—caring for the largest number of patients in the State of Louisiana. There he was responsible for Critical Access Hospitals, rural PPS hospitals, and Rural Health Clinics, akin to his responsibilities with Quorum Health Resources hospitals. He also has overseen 13 post-acute facilities from 20 to 250 beds in both public and private sector ownership structures.
Moreover, Don has extensive experience in healthcare consulting where his practice area focuses on health care delivery change, governance, health policy, and medical education.
Don has earned numerous healthcare awards including; Modern Healthcare’s “Up & Comer” Award and The National Association of Public Hospitals “Safety Net Award,” for his commitment and service to the Safety Net Mission. Because of his unique experiences leading the LSU Health System during Hurricane Katrina as well as his other health policy initiatives; Don has authored several articles and book chapters in mainstream health care publications.
