The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 instituted additional community benefit services and reporting requirements for hospitals exempt from federal taxation. Hospitals with a 501c tax exemption are now required to conduct a periodic Community Health Care Needs Assessment (CHNA) and proactively implement programs addressing community health needs, ranging from obesity to low-income level housing. Hospitals are also required to develop financial assistance programs specific to their community’s social economic conditions, allowing for uninsured patients to access health care services in their community. All must be reported to the Internal Revenue Service in annual tax filings.
