The Medicare provider-based service designation allows hospitals and critical access hospitals to obtain provider-based designations for physician practices, certified rural health clinics, cancer centers, behavioral health centers and other outpatient service lines. The provider-based designation in turn results in higher Medicare program reimbursements for services rendered to Medicare patients. In addition, provider-based designation allows services, such as physician practices and cancer centers to participate in the 340B Drug Pricing Program. Subsequent cost saving for pharmaceutical purchases are significant and a robust contract pharmacy program provides additional revenue streams.
The provider-based designation regulations are complex, challenging to implement and maintain compliance. This course will offer comprehensive understanding of designation compliance, existing provider-based regulatory requirements, operational issues, and reimbursement benefits.
