CMS has finalized regulations and sub-regulatory guidance implementing a NEW provider type titled Rural Emergency Hospital. Rural Emergency Hospitals (REH) were created by Congress via the Consolidated Appropriations Act in order to ensure that rural communities could maintain access to emergency room services and core ancillary services; enabling REH emergency room services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. REHs can provide other outpatient services as well but must maintain an average length-of-stay of 24 hours for acute inpatients.
Many rural hospitals and CAHs are struggling financially, and it is threatening access to patient care. The REH designation is intended to help hospitals maintain financial solvency. An annual subsidy of approximately $3.4 million is provided for REHs to maintain financial viability; and obtain outpatient reimbursement under the Outpatient Prospective Payment System versus the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.
Join Ovation Healthcare’s John Waltko as he presents an overview of the REH qualifying criteria needed to obtain the REH designation, Medicare reimbursement, federal subsidy and financial implications.
