ICYMI, in June, we broke ground on the Colorado Outdoors Medical Center (COMC), a 50,000 sq ft, state-of-the-art outpatient medical center designed to provide affordable, convenient, high-quality care to patients in the Montrose, CO community.
A number of folks joined me for the groundbreaking, including Dwayne Gunter, the CEO of QHR Health, Teresa (TJ) Johnson, our CFO, and David Dragoo, the founder of Colorado Outdoors. I am proud to be building the COMC at Colorado Outdoors, a 164-acre economic development project along the Uncompahgre River corridor.
In short, the COMC is a regional outpatient medical center that will give patients access to an array of outpatient services including surgery specialties like orthopedics, urology and gynecology, oncology, urgent care, imaging and other critical healthcare services. The project is partnership-driven and seeks to showcase Montrose’s independent physicians and clinicians and expand services by offering renowned specialists from across the nation. The COMC plans to welcome its first patients in 2023.
As we shared at the groundbreaking, the COMC benefits the citizens of Montrose and the extended community by bringing high-quality, well-paying jobs, multi-million dollar increases to the city’s tax base and additional economic activity such as sales tax revenues and new residents. The COMC helps patients by keeping quality healthcare local, delivering medical services not currently available in the area and meeting the needs of Montrose’s growing population.
QHR Health, Velocity Surgical Management and CO Outdoors Partner to Build Colorado Outdoors Medical Center
QHR Health, through our subsidiary Velocity Surgical Management, will build and operate the COMC. As President, I know Velocity Surgical Management has the funding, technology, financial services, clinical partnerships and physician support services to optimize the operations of the COMC’s outpatient services.
We also have the expertise. The singular focus of Velocity Surgical Management is the optimization of outpatient medical centers and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), and to this focus, we bring decades of expertise developing and managing new ASCs and turning around underperforming ones.
QHR Health: Strengthening Independent Community Hospitals
The mission of QHR Health and Velocity Surgical Management is to help communities retain and grow their local healthcare services to best serve their respective community populations. The COMC will bring value-added outpatient services and specialties through local and national partnerships to strengthen independent community healthcare.
Montrose County continues to project strong population growth, with the City of Montrose sitting at the epicenter of the region as the main service base. Combined with the investments being made in local housing and in the Montrose Regional Airport, Montrose expects to experience significant growth in healthcare needs.
Renowned providers and expanded specialties will ensure the COMC becomes a destination for outpatient care services and brings a strong brand for patients traveling from outside Colorado to Montrose to receive needed outpatient surgical services.
Outpatient and Ambulatory Strategies to Capitalize on Market and Payer Trends
Outpatient services are projected to increase in volume and be performed more often in outpatient-only medical centers. Contemporaneously, health insurers are requiring more surgeries and outpatient procedures be performed in an outpatient setting or an ambulatory surgery center (ASC). The COMC allows the Montrose community to capitalize on this market trend towards outpatient care. The new medical center also will help to attract patients who live outside of Montrose and Ouray counties and currently choose to access outpatient care elsewhere.
In other words, the COMC will help reverse the trend of outmigration. According to recent market share estimates, approximately half of healthcare services provided to area patients are performed elsewhere. The COMC will help return this healthcare business to Montrose.
